Course overview
This course provides a comprehensive overview of anaemia in chronic kidney disease, covering its pathophysiology, epidemiology, and clinical burden, alongside practical approaches to diagnosis and management. Participants will explore the mechanisms underlying anaemia of CKD and iron deficiency, understand its impact on morbidity and mortality, and develop confidence in evidence-based treatment strategies, including oral and intravenous iron therapy, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs), and the appropriate use of blood transfusion.

Dr Sebastian Spencer

Dr Sebastian Spencer graduated from Hull York Medical School and is an academic renal medicine registrar at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He is currently undertaking a PhD investigating anaemia in peritoneal dialysis, with a particular focus on iron deficiency and intravenous iron therapy.

His research interests include renal anaemia, iron deficiency, implementation science, and the optimisation of anaemia management pathways within nephrology services. He has contributed to national work relating to anaemia management in chronic kidney disease and is involved in the development of collaborative renal research programmes across the UK.
Prof Sunil Bhandari
Honorary Professor at Hull York Medical School and Consultant Nephrologist / Physician at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Professor Bhandari graduated from the University of Edinburgh and trained in Renal and Transplant Medicine in Yorkshire (UK) and Sydney Australia. He is a Consultant in Nephrology and Honorary Professor at Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust (Hull University Teaching hospitals NHS Trust). He is also the co-Director of the UK Advanced Nephrology Course. Professor Bhandari leads in collaboration a research programme based around renal anaemia, CKD progression and the effects of iron therapy on cardiac and renal function. His ongoing collaborative translational research includes effects of iron therapy in uraemic cardiomyopathy and mitochondrial function.
Prof Debasish Banerjee

Professor Banerjee is a clinical nephrologist managing CKD, dialysis and kidney transplant patients with much expertise in CKD patients with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, heart failure and diabetes. As a member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy, and following his establishment of a unique kidney failure - heart failure clinic at St George's, he has created international strategies for managing CKD patients with cardiovascular disease. As part of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD)/UK Kidney Association (UKKA) Clinical Study Group, he has assisted in the formulation of national guidelines for the management of CKD patients with the added complication of diabetes. Professor Banerjee works as the steering committee member of the International Society of Nephrology, Cardio-Renal Group. He is MBBS Quality Lead and Co-Director of the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at St George's, and sits on the British Heart Foundation's CVD Prevention Guidelines committee. He was Chair of the UKKA Education and Training Committee from 2020 to 2025.
